A man spotted driving almost twice the posted speed limit in a 45 mph zone tossed drugs out the window as he led deputies on a short pursuit in Golden Valley last week, according to the
Mohave County Sheriff's Office
A little more than an ounce of methamphetamine packaged in two baggies was recovered from the side of Aztec Road shortly after 38-year-old Keith Ray Johansen drove through the intersection at Shinarump Road Friday afternoon, said Sheriff's spokeswoman Trish Carter.
Deputies first tried to stop Johansen around 4:45 p.m. after his vehicle was clocked at 83 mph while southbound on Aztec Road.
Carter said Johansen did not stop his car after deputies tried to initiate a traffic stop.
Instead, he reportedly continued down the road, slowing slightly at an intersection on Aztec, where he turned onto Shinarump Road.
Deputies said they watched as Johansen tossed something out the driver's side window.
Johansen stopped his vehicle near the intersection of Shinarump and Apache roads. Deputies conducted a high-risk traffic stop, meaning they approached the car with guns drawn, and took Johansen into custody.
Carter said a records check showed him to have a suspended driver's license and a misdemeanor warrant for failure to pay fines issued by Kingman Municipal Court.
A police dog and his handler went to the scene to help search the car and alerted on the center console, where deputies said they located a joint.
A pipe with alleged drug residue was also found in the area where deputies saw Johansen toss something out the window.
He was booked into the Mohave County Jail on felony charges of unlawful flight, two counts of possession of dangerous drugs for sale, two counts of transport of dangerous drugs for sale, two counts of possession of dangerous drugs, three counts of possession of drug paraphernalia and possession of marijuana.
He was also cited for driving with a suspended license, criminal speeding and reckless driving.
