Gov. Jan Brewer issued a declaration of emergency Friday because of the cold weather and a propane shortage, but a couple of local propane dealers say they haven't noticed a shortage at all.
The declaration of emergency, which was set to last for 15 days, suspended the rules that limit the time in which propane can be transported and distributed. The decision came as a response to the increased demand for propane throughout the state, which depleted supplies and had distributors scrambling to keep up, according to the declaration.
Calls to Brewer's office were not returned before deadline.
"Cold weather is always good for propane sales," said Pioneer Propane owner Dan Cantwell.
Cantwell said his company has had no trouble making or receiving its propane deliveries and that he was not aware of Brewer's declaration.
Scott Brockelmeyer, a spokesman for Ferrellgas, said propane demand in the area is up significantly.
"We're in fine shape and have plenty of product to deliver," Brockelmeyer said. "But it is an interesting time for our company and industry in the area."
For the first time in roughly seven years, Ferrellgas trucks were out on a Sunday in Kingman and the surrounding area making deliveries, he said.
Brockelmeyer said the sudden spike in demand has increased the time it takes for Ferrellgas to make all of its deliveries.
"We're telling customers that it may take 10 business days to get propane to them," he said.
Al Anbardan, the owner of 93 USA Fuel and Express Lube and Tire on Stockton Hill Road, said he's been very busy with propane sales since last week. He, too, has had no problems getting or receiving propane deliveries. He doesn't think there's a shortage.
"The price of propane is cheap (right now)," he said. "It's 50 cents (a gallon) cheaper than normal."
