Thomas Sissom and Eileen Poling, the mother/son duo accused of stealing from Dunton Motors in Bullhead City, pleaded guilty Jan. 18 to theft and must pay $100,000 restitution to the dealership.
Scott Dunton, the owner of Dunton Motors, said Poling had a consignment agreement with his business, where Sissom worked as lot manager from 2005 to 2008, to provide vehicles from Rucker Motors to the dealership and receive $500 beyond what each vehicle sold for. Dunton said Sissom would show that a vehicle was sold and that Poling was issued a check for $500 and then turn around and write a check to her that exceeded the $500 agreement.
"There were 68 car deals where these people stole from us," Dunton said. "It was a real bad deal for us."
Dunton believes more people were involved in the scheme but believing and proving are two very different things.
Dunton said the case could've turned out two different ways: collect $100,000 from the duo or watch them go to prison and get nothing.
If he had his way, Dunton Motors would've received restitution and the two would've gone to prison as well. But even though it didn't quite work out like that, Dunton said he is happy with the job County Attorney Matt Smith did.
"This is about the best deal we could've had," Dunton said. "But they should've gone to prison."
The two must pay $65,000 by Feb 26, the date of their sentencing, according to court records. The remaining $35,000 must be paid within six months of sentencing.
If they're able to comply with the agreement, including serving three years of probation, the theft conviction will be dropped to a misdemeanor. However, if they are unable to comply, the plea agreement will be null and void, according to court documents.
