GOLDEN VALLEY - The Golden Valley Fire District governing board recently started the process of selling the administrative office at 3327 N. Mayer Road and the 4,369-square-foot Station No. 11 at 2809 N. Mayer Road.
The board authorized Fire Chief Thomas O'Donohue to negotiate the possible sale of the two properties, which are now considered expendable with the new station coming on line.
The board also authorized the GVFD proposed budget to be publicized in a local newspaper for 20 days as required by Arizona Revised Statutes, waived the Public Safety Training Center rental fees for Bountiful Baskets and authorized board member Steven Robinson to attend a fire safety session hosted by Saunders & Co.
In the chief's report, O'Donohue outlined a new program called "Breakfast With the Fire Chief" in which he makes himself available to answer questions from residents on the first and second Tuesdays of the month at two local restaurants. He also said that construction of Station 11 is almost complete and plans are for the new fire station to become operational in the very near future. An open house will be scheduled for residents shortly after the new station opens.
O'Donohue is also taking advantage of some extra funds available as part of the contract for services with MTC/Arizona State Prison by commissioning artwork in the form of steel silhouettes for each of the fire stations. The artwork silhouettes featuring firefighters will begin appearing within the next two weeks, beginning at the new Station 11.
O'Donohue also provided information on the district's call response for April. There were 170 calls:
seven fire suppressions
114 medical emergencies
42 "service calls," which could include citizens calling about a snake or flooding in their home
two "good intents," where a citizen might call in about a brush fire and it turns out to be an authorized backyard burn or a very smoky barbecue
five false alarms
and two out-of-district calls.
