Mohave deputies catch hookah robbery suspect

Marcus Thomas Cruz

MOHAVE VALLEY - Acting on a tip, Mohave County Sheriff's detectives arrested a suspect in the violent robbery of a Mohave Valley bookstore last week.

Marcus Thomas Cruz, 23, a transient from Needles, Calif., was taken into custody late Wednesday afternoon near a parking lot in the 10200 block of Harbor Avenue.

Cruz allegedly struck a bookstore employee over the head with a water pipe on the morning of Nov. 6 and forced her to remove most of her clothing before she fled to a nearby business for help after a customer interrupted the crime in progress.

The woman was treated for a head laceration at Valley View Medical Center. The robber made off with an undisclosed amount of cash, according to Mohave County Sheriff's Office spokeswoman Trish Carter.

On Wednesday, deputies staged patrol units and waited for Cruz to arrive at the parking lot, where he was supposed to meet with friends. They conducted a high-risk arrest at about 4:15 p.m. after he arrived.

Cruz was taken into custody without incident. He faces felony charges of armed robbery and aggravated assault with a dangerous instrument.

"Thanks to the public (for its) help in assisting the sheriff's office with numerous tips regarding the bookstore robbery suspect," said Carter.
