Faith Column: In troubled times, find a safe haven in the Lord

The outside entrance to my office is in an area where two wings of the building meet, causing a vortex when the Kingman winds blow. Quite often, the area has to be cleaned because of the accumulation of trash brought in by the winds.
This past week as I was about to enter my office, I noticed that there were a number of feathers, which I assumed to be wing feathers of pigeons. I picked up several feathers to use as an object lesson for a children's sermon. The feathers reminded me of Psalm 36:7. The psalmist wrote: "How precious is Your loving kindness, O God! Therefore the children of men put their trust under the shadow of your wings."
King David had been contemplating the wickedness in the world, as well as men who oppress one another. Then, he turned his thoughts from the discouraging thoughts of the wicked, to thoughts concerning the goodness of God, and His providential care and protection. He concluded that the loving kindness of God is a reason for complete trust in Him.
The psalmist also draws for us a picture of the comfort that is found in trusting God, likening it to the shelter a baby bird would find under the wings of its mother. It is my understanding that in the presence of danger, whether it be a predator, fire or a storm, a mother bird will gather her hatchlings under her wings to protect them.
I once read a story about the aftermath of a forest fire. Those who were walking through the burned area to be certain the fire was completely extinguished found a large bird that was dead, killed by the fire. One of the firemen moved the burned bird with his boot, and when he did, out from underneath the bird scurried several small hatchlings. They had found safety beneath the wings of their mother, who was willing to die in order to protect them.
In this world in which we are living, we face much wickedness (not meaning to be pessimistic). However, regardless of what comes against us, there is a place in which we can find shelter and refuge, giving to us peace and security in the day of trouble.
King David also wrote of his relationship with God. David had a testimony that he was "a man after God's own heart." In Psalm 17:8 he wrote: "Keep me as the apple of Your eye; hide me under the shadow of your wings."
Over and again, we read of God's protection. He is a refuge, a strong and mighty tower. Psalm 46:1 declares that "God is our refuge and strength; a very present help in the time of trouble."
No matter what trials you may face, may you always find in Him the peace and safety He can be when you place your trust in Him.
