Cast shines in 'The Fault in Our Stars'

The Fault in Our Stars

Based on the novel of the same name, "The Fault In Our Stars" explores the hokey, disappointing inadequacies of society's ability to cater to the needs of teens with a terminal illness.

In her final days, Hazel (Shailene Woodsley) is burdened with keeping those around her happy. Augustus (Ansel Elgort) fights to be remembered for accomplishing a great achievement before he dies. Hazel fights to make every moment memorable.

Woodsley and Elgort are endearing as the main characters. Their emotion and passion for the material lead to an honest connection with the audience. Viewers are spared the usual clichés and sentimentality of movies that spotlight end-of-life issues.

The film displays the unconstrained wit of adolescence. Few movies successfully capture the angst of being a teenager. This story balances the pranks, disappointments, fears, laughter, hope, and pursuit of dreams for teens who do not have their whole lives ahead of them.

Willem Dafoe provides an impeccably memorable scene as Peter Von Houten, the author of Hazel's favorite novel. There are heartbreaking scenes, laugh-out-loud moments, and thought-provoking philosophy.

I give this movie 3 Miners for remaining true to the novel but oversimplifying the difficult choices that these young lovers faced.
