Bill Goodale, a member of the Kingman Unified School Board, suffered a stroke Sunday morning and remains in critical condition at St. Joseph's Hospital and Medical Center in Phoenix.
Goodale got out of bed before his wife, state Rep. Doris Goodale. He made coffee and started working in his office.
"When I got up, I found him lying on the floor of his office," Doris Goodale said. "It looked as if he had slipped out of his chair."
He was flown by medevac from his home in Kingman to the hospital in Phoenix.
A blood vessel ruptured deep within the left side of his brain, causing the stroke and a large pool of blood to accumulate on his brain, Doris Goodale said.
Doctors are attempting to remove the pooled blood with chemicals, and as of Monday, the need for surgery was not expected, she said.
The doctors are concerned about the location and nature of the rupture, Doris Goodale said. A stroke on the left side of the brain affects the right side of the body as well as a person's ability to speak and reason.
He is heavily sedated and is fitted with a breathing tube. He's not speaking, but, "Last night (Sunday) he was able to move both his hands and feet," she said.
She said doctors are planning on removing the tube today. Once that occurs, they'll be able to better assess his condition, she said.
"We're doing OK," said Doris Goodale, who is at the hospital with her daughter and grandson. "Right now, we're hoping for a lot of prayers."
