Did marijuana jealously lead to arson?

KINGMAN - Cheech and Chong jokes aside, an attempt to burn down a not-yet-open medical marijuana dispensary in Kingman went up in smoke Sunday morning.

The Kingman Green Medical Dispensary hasn't even begun to distribute medical marijuana, but that hasn't stopped suspects from twice trying to burn down the Northern Avenue business.

At about 6 a.m. Sunday, a man wearing a black hoodie and dark clothing was spotted holding something on fire while he drove a sedan in the direction of the store.

Witnesses told deputies the man threw the burning item on the passenger-side floorboard and fled to a vehicle waiting nearby.

Minimal damage was done to the building in the 2000 block of Northern Avenue, but the manager thinks the suspect might be an illegal marijuana dealer.

"We're not here to compete," said Dawni Curry.

In a previous incident at the store, someone busted down the back wall of the business and shot a flare up into the ventilation system, but a lack of oxygen prevented a fire.

Curry said she doesn't know if the same suspect or suspects were involved in both incidents, but she finds them "a little too coincidental."

The store's owners put up fencing with razor wire to keep people out of the back of the business. Now, said Curry, heavy-duty posts will be installed in the parking lot to keep cars from crashing into the dispensary.

Curry said the store has a state-of-the-art security system and as many as 17 cameras captured footage of Sunday's early morning incident.

Additionally, she wants would-be arsonists and thieves to understand the store has armed security 24 hours a day.

While the owners have had to wait several months to pass an inspection, that occurred on Friday, paving the way for the store to open for business.

"We're waiting for our harvest to cure," said Curry, and the store now accepts donations from qualified patients and caregivers.

As for the attempts to burn down the store, Curry is philosophical.

"I think it's people being selfish and greedy," she said. "Ninety percent or our clientele are veterans and older people. They aren't the kind of people that want to buy marijuana illegally. That's why they want to come here."

Mohave County Sheriff's spokeswoman Trish Carter said the vehicle that burned was a 1990 Dodge sedan that was reported stolen out of Glendale.

The suspect is male, 6-foot and between 200 and 210 pounds.

Carter asked anyone with information on the incident to call the Mohave County Sheriff's Office at (928) 753-0753 or Silent Witness at (928) 753-1234.

Curry said anyone looking for information on medical marijuana or how the process works at Kingman Green Medical Dispensary could call her at (928) 692-0000.

The people who are stating that the clinic is gouging customers need to educate themselves on the actual benefits of medical marijuana. Go to ASA (Americans for Safe Access) or NORML and you'll see that the cost of growing a pound of HIGH QUALITY MEDICAL GRADE medication is cost prohibitive for most people. Also, this isn't your parents pot the THC content has quadrupled to about 20 percent which means your 400 dollar Oz will last you as long as a pound I'm the 60's. It's impossible to debate this in this town because the so called small government conservatives refuse to acknowledge the benefits or your a tweaker. As a medical marijuana patient for years it's sad to see so much ignorance about a wonderful plant. Is it abused? Yes but so are guns and alcohol and you all would flip out if they were illegal. Let the cancer patients have there relief and seriously read up on the subject. Then you will be equipped to have an opinion.

I will say this...all the Pro MJ folks really need to get on the same page. Is it a drug or is it a weed? Is it a medicine or a wild plant growing naturally?

Drug or medicine...sounds like the FDA might get involved. Weed or plant...Dept of Agriculture?

And I wish people would not use hemp....since that is normally referring to the varieties that have very low THC content and are used for rope, cloth, oil, seeds, etc. I doubt any local growers are going to spin their crop into fibers....lol.

Btw...In all my years I've never seen MJ just growing alongside the road or on a path through a woods.

"You have to be kidding me"

The reason pot smokers are paranoid, is because masked men break into their homes, sometimes they're bad guys, sometimes they're cops. But the bottom line is marijuana prohibition makes a simple plant worth $9000 a pound, that's why they're paranoid.

Ive been to the sight many times. Its a great place to get information and growing tips.

Yes there is a forum for those feeling paranoid for Marijuana. Marijuana is like any other drug. Some will have effects they dont care for. Paranoia has long been spoken about with Marijuana. In my experience the people who felt paranoid were easy intimidated and nervous prior to smoking. The Marijuana's opening effect on the senses an mental roadblocks are more then some can handle.

The mental clarity many enjoy from Marijuana a precentage just cant handle and feel paranoid as if their mind is moving to fast. Back in my day of heavy smoking to party. If someone got paranoid we would all say...You need to shut up and smoke some more. That usually fixed their problem by calming them down.

@ You have to be kidding me:

"Schizophrenic"? "All those studies"? What studies are you talking about? Sounds more like you have a Paranoid problem. Are all of those pot smokers after you? Think they'll jump up out of their bean bags and come looking for you? Get a life. It's bad enough that some wackos are trying to keep the dispensary from opening, stupid as it may seem. I don't blame people for not wanting it here, especially since it just gives the government an excuse to curtail the honest card holders from growing their own if they're within 25 miles from a dispensary. How dumb is that? Just another ruse to chanel the funds to the government. Just eliminate the stupid law that prohibits legitimate card holders from growing their own! If you want to pay ten times the amount at a dispensary, go for it, but don't penalize the card holders!

"Do you really think dealing drugs legally or not is a free market?"

So CVS, Walgreens, Rite Aid, et al are NOT operating in a free market? Hmm, I did not know that.

Article comment by: MMJ vs The Drug Cartels

In my opinion, it's only a matter of time before the legal dispensarys will be working for the drug cartels." We're not here to compete," said Dawni Curry. Well the drug cartel is like Walmart, the only difference is that the drug cartel kills their competition. How can you really compete with that?

Here's a discussion blog with dozens of weed smokers discussing how to get rid of the paranoia and psychosis that comes along with smoking weed.

Yeah --- that's right. A group of long and short time avid pot smokers, all admitting that paranoia is a side effect of pot.

http://forum.grasscity.com/recreational-marijuana-use/174860-marijuana-paranoia.html

But this is all a hoax because its all in my head, right?

Oh sure. So I'm just supposed to turn my back and pretend that none of my weed smoking friends are not acting paranoid even while they go on and on about the Chemtrails and are freaked out about United Nations conspiracies or Obama planning to "Take away all our guns"".

Have you visited any of the weed treatment message baords where EVERYONE there talks about their unusual paranoid feelings CAUSED by their POT habit!

But to a pot smoker, I guess it would ALL Be untrue too? All those studies.... not true. Probably just a government plot to make us THINK that weed can mess with our brains, right?!

Surrrrre.... That's got to be it. All those studies are FAKE, and are done simply to control us.....Yeah, sure, that's it.

What happened to medical marijuana being Non-Profit, seems that's the part of the law the state forget to enforce

Article comment by: Growing news

When I renewed my Medical Marijuana Card last Sat I learned a few things. Anyone with a card issued BEFORE the Kingman dispensary opens will be allowed to grow at home until they RENEW their card. In my case May 14 will be the "cut off" for home growing.

By then I expect the law to ammend the 25 mile clause due to pressure statewide.

I also realised the number of people my age 53 and older renewing and getting cards. Many were a decade my elder and more. I think a half dozen were under 30 in the crowd. If this Sat turnout was typical for card issuing. There are thousands of card holders in Kingman by now.

All walks, income levels, profession, age, and race hold cards. Maybe the person next to you in Church holds a card. From what I experienced Its possible.

Article comment by: No worries

The 25 mile clause will go away in time. The State has for two year now allowed ALL card holders wishing to grow at home the right to do so. Now that the vast majority are growing due to the state dragging its feet trying to slow down dispensaries. All its going to take is card holders signing a petition and forming a Class action lawsuit.

The state must give equal rights and protections under the law for ALL card holders. Those growing within 25 miles are due the same right as those living outside of 25 miles. After two years the precedent has been set and card holders will fight for the right to continue home growing.

The State cant afford to fight a class action and will drop the clause. Card holders cant afford to be forced to buy at prices they cannot pay.

Article comment by: Problem with Marinol

@ Mr Parker,

Marinol as been around a long time. It's been unhelpful for the majority of users. The problem is because its synthetic.

The federal government will not allow any form of Marijuana in any prescription medication. The natural THC and other compounds in Marijuana cant be man made in a lab.

Because of this Marinol has been not much better then any placebo to most patients.

Marijuana is here to stay. Everyone may as well get used to it. Now that the Feds are finding ways to make profits off of Marijuana. It wont be long until we see coast to coast the laws changing for reduced penalties and possibly decriminalization in many states.

@ you have to be kidding me. Sad to report, the most renown pot smoker's of our time have cancel all of their touring dates due to paranoid and short term memory lost. "NOT"

Having tried pot from time to time "for recreation use only" and "investigative purpose's". In the course of my "investigative" research, I did experiences some unusual side effects. None of which you wrote about.

How ever i would caution, mixing alcohol in the course of any research project, it can have an altering and lingering effect, much like you describe.

Paranoid crazies huh?? Lol, apparently you need to do your research. We have plenty of those in kingman, but that's because of Meth, not marijuana. Maybe if the tweakers would start smoking marijuana and lay of the Meth, this town would be a better place! So the private growers are upset? Well move your private operation 26 miles away from the Dispensary, wow! Problem solved! These amateur attempts got these idiots nowhere besides one step closer to jail, lol. They've passed inspection, and they WILL be opening. Give it up already! And for those of you who are against it because you don't smoke, why are you even worried about it in the first place? If you're not going to be dealing with them, then what concern is it of yours in the first place?

Article comment by: watch the movie Savages

If you watch the movie savages, you will see what it really means for all the legal dispensarys in Arizona. The drug cartels and gangs will not give up controll of the drug market. Watch the movie it's a perfect example of whats happening. Do you really think dealing drugs legally or not is a free market? Well it's not the gangs get a cut or else. Thats my opinion, but maybe it's just those crazy potheads that want to grow their own...

I think it's important to mention here that getting your product from a dispensary is much safer than buying off the street. At least they have some controls in place and you know the product you're getting is not laced with something more harmful. I did smoke some of the street stuff a few years back and it was so strong (probably laced) that I couldn't function.

This place that is trying to open is nothing but a group of crooks. They could care less about the veterans well maybe they just care about their money. This place wants to charge 260 to 390 an oz for medical marijuana and their only reason is because they have overhead. Figure this out people yheres almost 500 card holders in Mojave county yes not everyone will use them but if everyone were to atleast buy one oz from them that's money pushing almost 150,000 open your eyes people the placee are supposed to be non profit well I don't really think they have that much overhead. So please don't say thatthey are here to help
