KINGMAN - Walgreens, one of America's leading pharmacy chains, has submitted plans to build a second store in Kingman at the corner of Route 66 and Stockton Hill Road.

Kingman's Principal Planner Rich Ruggles confirmed Thursday afternoon that the company has been in talks with the city since the beginning of the year, and on Oct. 31 submitted plans for a new store to take the place of several defunct businesses along the northwest corner of the intersection. The buildings that once held the Hot Rod Café, Oak Furniture, Valley Furniture and the Imperial Motel were all bought by Bencor Development, Walgreens' primary property developer, earlier this year.

"I can confirm that that is true, they purchased all the property between Hall Street, Stockton Hill, Andy Devine and Broadway," Ruggles said. "Bencor is typically the owner and Walgreens leases the buildings from them."

Ruggles noted that Bencor's plans indicate the building will be 15,696 square feet, comparable to most other Walgreens stores. He was unsure whether or not the developer has applied for the permits necessary to demolish the standing structures.

Access had been the major sticking point with Walgreens' plans, which are still under review. Ruggles said the plans as currently written call for access off of Andy Devine, Hall Street and Broadway only.

"We did have to work with them to come up with a plan that would work for the site," he said. "They're not going to have any direct access off of Stockton Hill Road, and the access off Andy Devine will be a right turn in, right turn out scenario."

A spokesperson for Walgreens, Tiffani Bruce, said the company hoped to have the store open by fall of 2009. She added that the store appears to be a genuine addition to Kingman and not a relocation of the existing Walgreens at 3487 Stockton Hill Road.

When will the new Walgreens open?

Maybe that's why Walgreens is building another location to provide more customer service to get your perscription filled more quickly???

Maybe Macy's can move into the soon-to-be evacuated Office Depot...

C'mon Loyd, Snuggy shops out of town too, but you're not hacking on him/her. I bet Snuggy and I bump into each other quite often in BHC/LHC without knowing it, because realistically this town continues to shun good shopping venues.

With way the economy is going there is no way we need another Walgreens. Especially when they can not get prescriptions filled in a timely manner.

Oh Great, another drug store that will leave sick people standing in line for hours waiting for medicine to make them feel better. I am very discouraged with all but Uptown Drugs, who seems to be the only drug store that can actually fill a perscription in a timely maner.

The Lake Havasu Mall is reall nice. I do alot of shopping there with more varieties. Kingman needs a mall for competition otherwise this city will lose more revenue. Kingman needs to put out more for what the people want not just two dept stores. Even the Prescott Mall has better selections which its nice to walk around and shop. Kingman needs to learn from these two cities. Otherwise I will still do my shopping out of Kingman until they get their act together and offer more for the people.

I'm glad to hear that they are building a second location. Sure it's in an odd spot, but I don't think they would have bought the property if Walgreen's couldn't make it work. Makes me wonder how much money a drug store takes in yearly...

On another note, I hate to hear about Office Depot closing, but where they were at was really odd too. I highly doubt that we'll be getting any other stores coming in for a while. Maybe city council should focus on getting more industrial companies in here. Maybe bring in some companies that will help service all the elderly folks here (there really are none) if they really do want to make this a "retirement" community- seeings how a vast majority of baby boomers will be retiring in the next 5-15 yrs.

Just a thought

Regardless of the location, Walgreens is obviously not concerned with the building fees.

I welcome any new store to Kingman, I don't care if it's Walgreen's, K-mart, Walmart, etc.

What we really need is a MALL with a MACYs. This is needed for the kids, high school, junior high age, Moms, seniors, and it would provide jobs and a place for all to enjoy. Get with the times, Kingman, don't you think it's about time.

I agree with you all on this bad location. Hualapai Mountain Rd would be a perfect location especially for those who live over on that side of town. So people dont have to travel and easy to go in & out of.

That is really a bad place to put a Walgreens. There will be no access to it whatsoever!

That corner is already a problem without Walgreens. It is also too close to their other store. A better spot traffic and market wise would be further up Hualapai Mountain Rd. Ah, but corporate experts who have never even been in Kingman know better by just looking at a map!
