A $400,000 local refencing project is among nine new statewide highway projects awarded construction contracts by the state transportation board Tuesday.
The project, which is being paid for with funds from the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act, involves the replacement of barbed wire safety fences with chain link along a roughly three-mile stretch of Interstate 40 from Eastern Avenue to Rattlesnake Wash. The project's contract was awarded to R.K. Sanders, Inc., out of Phoenix, whose bid came in $107,330 below the Arizona Department of Transportation's estimate.
In total, ADOT has saved more than $7.3 million in ARRA-related construction costs through such low-bid contracts. According to ADOT's Kingman area engineer, Mike Kondelis, the extra savings will be pooled back into Arizona's 13 rural counties to fund other shovel-ready projects further down ADOT's priority list.
Kondelis noted that, since the refencing project
was just awarded, he was not yet sure how many local jobs would result or when the project would begin, though he did maintain it would be done relatively quickly.
"There were a couple of these projects across the state that were smaller, more maintenance-oriented projects," he said. "I don't know the contract time, but that'll be a fairly short term project. It'll definitely be done this summer."
It's certainly not the only stimulus project Kingman will see this summer, however. Three large, multi-million dollar Mohave County highway projects are also set to go out to bid this month, including $15 million for construction of new southbound lanes on U.S. 93 from milepost 104.1 to 106, and a $10.7 million pavement preservation project along I-40 from Holy Moses Wash to Rattlesnake Wash in Kingman.

The Holy Moses Wash to Rattlesnake Wash would fix the road through town.
