PHOENIX - Sen. John McCain ended the third quarter with 500 times more cash on hand - $5 million in all - than his closest declared Republican rival, according to reports filed with the Federal Election Commission.

"He's clearly on the path to continue raising money in a substantial amount," said Frederic Solop, a Northern Arizona University political science professor.

McCain, who lost the 2008 presidential election to Barack Obama and is seeking a fifth Senate term, raised $919,000 during the three months ending Sept. 30. That included $116,000 from political action committees and other groups.

Republican Chris Simcox, former president of the Minuteman Civil Defense Corps, a volunteer group that patrols the southwestern border, raised $20,000 during the quarter, including $2,500 from a Reston, Va., organization called Minuteman PAC Inc. He had a little less than $10,000 cash on hand.

A message left with Simcox's campaign headquarters in Scottsdale wasn't returned by late Friday afternoon.

Phoenix businessman Jim Deakin, another Republican, raised $2,040 in the quarter and had $5,400 cash in hand.

William Lundy of Lake Havasu City, a Republican who has filed a statement of candidacy with the FEC, didn't report any contributions by Thursday's third-quarter deadline.

An aide who asked to be identified only as "a McCain spokesperson" responded in an e-mail that the senator's contributions to date "reflect the broad level of support he enjoys from Arizonans."

Solop said McCain remains a strong candidate even though more conservative members of his party think he's soft on immigration and too willing to work with Democrats. But he said that faction doesn't dominate the GOP.

"As far as the general public in Arizona, McCain has a very strong reputation," Solop said.

Among Democrats, Rodolfo Garcia of Tucson raised $1,441 during the quarter and had $584 cash on hand. Joseph Huff of Scottsdale didn't report contributions.

@equal opportunist - What does McCain's wealth have to do with him being a rat in Republican clothes?

Article comment by: equal opportunist

Why is there the assumption that the "real world" is poor? McCain and his family have taken what they have been given and prospered within the same world everyone is born into. What's up with the hate and discontent? Each of us has equal opportunity to succeed in this country. But our success is dependent upon how much effort we are willing to invest. Wealth comes from knowledge and wise decision-making and being responsible enough to our families to plan ahead. We are where we are at in life based on the choices we have made so far. The only thing keeping you in the "poor real world concept" is your lack of belief in yourself and your abilities to succeed at whatever you chose to accomplish. Stop blaming the wealthy for your self-doubt and insecurities. They are just a little further down the path of life and have chosen the high road instead of the low. Take some time to assess where you are in life and what you desire to accomplish. Make a list, study those like McCain and other achievers and get busy taking care of business.

Article comment by: Carpetbagger McCain

Any opportunistic or exploitive outsider is called a carpet bagger. It's certainly makes one wonder given the Birthers why McCain even represents Arizona at all. He actually lived in Florida and only took up residence here to run for office in an "easy state to win". Time to send this carpetbagger back where he came from Vote Simcox.

Important to remembe that McCain was one of the most active members of the exclusive club - The Keating Five.

The lobbyist, James Grogan said during his testimony at the Senate Ethics Committee hearings on the S&L fiasco, "If you make contributions you have a better chance of getting time in front of a Senator..." (see Witness Says Keating's Way Was 'Buying Access' to Five By RICHARD L. BERKE, Special to The New York Times Published: Saturday, December 15, 1990).

McCain should have removed from "public service" then.

McCain like all of them are prostitutes - just working for the ones who give the money. But like we all know the system is set up so an incumbent wins.

We do need another party.

I'm sure all those money donations are from La Raza and all the other open-border groups. It certainly isn't from those who love this country.

McCain is certainly politically vulnerable both from the left and the right. I for one, had hoped that we could have had some prominent Arizona Democrat run against him in 2010. Unfortunately, that doesn't seem to be happening.

On the right Simcox excites a lot of libertarian types, but he has little money, and not much more support among the Republican party heirarchy. So realistically he has an almost zero chance of getting the Republican nomination. I hate to say it, but the way things look now McCain is practically guaranteed another six years in office.

I have never donated money directly to a political candidate before, but I am donating to Simcox in the hope that he can overthrow McCain. McCain is a disgrace to Arizona. After the Christmas/New Year holidays (when I can free up some time) I am going to volunteer to work for the Simcox campaign.

Besides McCain, we need to vote out all incumbents; local, state, and federal, to show them who they work for.

John McSame is a sellout. Democrat/Republican... all the same blue blooders that could care less about the concerns of the citizens.

Yet people will still vote for him like sheep. They will vote them all back in.
