KINGMAN - A Golden Valley man's attempt to push the boundaries of the county's dress code policy at Monday's Board of Supervisors meeting got him what he wanted, arrested. Jim Kanelos, 62, was booked on charges of second-degree misdemeanor trespassing for violating the county's dress code policy for wearing a hat and waving a flag during Monday's meeting. He was still in custody Monday afternoon.

Kanelos asked to speak on a change to the planning and zoning ordinances on the Board's agenda. When he reached the speaker's podium, he pulled out a small American flag and plopped a cap decorated with the stars and stripes on his head.

"God bless America, and by the way I'm for this resolution," he said, waving the flag before he was surrounded by Mohave County deputies.

"Mr. Kanelos, we have rules about hats and flags in the building," County Supervisor Gary Watson said sternly.

County Security Coordinator Bob Prince asked Kanelos if he would remove the hat and put away the flag. Kanelos said, "No."

Prince then asked him if he would consider leaving the auditorium and warned him that he risked arrest for trespassing if he refused.

When Kanelos refused to leave, deputies placed him in handcuffs and led him out of the building.

Kanelos was part of a group of about 15 people who protested the county's dress code and flag and gun policies outside the county administration building Monday morning with flags. A few of the protesters were wearing guns and at least one was carrying a pitchfork.

Deputies were on hand to make sure things didn't get out of control. Two deputies watched from the edge of the crowd, two more deputies stood near the doors to the building and at least three more watched from just inside the building.

Prince calmly warned members of the group, including Kanelos, several times that they could not protest in front of the building and needed to move further down the road to a designated area in the public right of way. If they did not move they faced arrest for trespassing, he said.

Someone asked who owned the property that the building was standing on.

"Mohave County," Prince said.

"So we're getting kicked off of public property while holding American flags," said Golden Valley resident Alan DiCicco.

Prince also warned Kanelos and the others that they could not bring their flags inside the building.

"I think you people are totally misinformed," he said. He offered several times to meet with members of the group to discuss their issues with the county's policies.

A protestor asked if the group could bring a video camera with them to the meeting.

Prince said he was willing to let the group tape the meeting.

"You better start looking for a new job now, because I plan to run for county supervisor in 2012," said Kingman resident Sharon Holmes.

"Are you threatening me and my job?" Prince asked.

"I'm just saying you might want to start looking, and take (County Manager Ron) Walker with you," she said. "The people of this county want to be heard."

Members of the group dispersed just before the Board meeting to stow their flags and weapons in their vehicles.

Hmmm wasn't this the same person that filed a lawsuit for something like $42M because his rights were violated...and the judge threw most of it out?

So will he be filing another now? Must have a lot of money to blow on legal expenses.

Right or wrong..the current rule says no hats. He intentionally kept his off til he got to the podium, just to make a statement. When asked to remove it or leave, he refused. Fine, statement made. Prices need to be paid for your beliefs.

These are not radicals, these are people who are concerned about their freedoms being erroded. The hats and the flags are symbolic of the issue. The county building has been paid by all of us and it should be open to all without restriction. If they were creating a riot, that is one thing but they weren't. We all need to get on the bandwagon here and help support this movement for our freedoms or we are going to lose them to a few arrogant bullies who think they are far more important than we the people.

Are there no longer flags inside the Court Room or in the meeting halls of local Government? I see no difference for the court rooms or a citizen being allowed to wave an American Flag........

Just my opinion

The supervisors think they own the public. They don't realize they are the employee.
They really have lost their mind.
If a muslem walks in there with an islamic flag they would not arrest them.

Now Barney, couldn't you have just let Jim wear the hat and hold the flag? Now look at all the hullabaloo you created. Now go get Goober and Otis and get Jim out of jail and apologize. We'll be lucky if he doesn't call the Mayor and the Governor.

"Out with the Old and in with the New"

Those are the exact words of Supervisor Tom Sockwell as he mumbles into the microphone addressing the issue of the old Public Works building. He is so hard to understand when speaking. The point is that it seems ironic that Sockwell would make a quoth like that but never seemed to consider that was what his recall was all about. He needs to take this own advice and apply it to himself personally.

At the 3-7-11 BOS meeting he had to be prompted at least three times on what to do and say next. Certainly not what one would expect from a two term Supervisor.

Get the disc of the meeting if you doubt what I am saying and see for your self.

Only to people like you that do not know the constitution or our history think we are nuts. No where in the constitution does it say the government has the right to tell you how to dress, where you can take the American flag or when and where you are allowed to protest. In many places in this country you have to get permission to protest and still they will arrest you.
I noticed you did not name a right you do not have to ask your masters permission to do.
It is not about any one thing but the many many things. The BOS does not have the right to tell anyone what they can do on their private property. But they do and people like you are condition to accept any thing they say.
By the way there was no tantrums thrown. the only disruption was the BOS having an old man arrested for wearing a hat. 3 Deputies and 3 security guards to arrest one old man who was not resisting. What a waste of time and money. A sheriff who supports his masters the county instead of the people who elected him. Not following his oath of office.
The BOS should have had their meeting with nothing said and there would have been no news about it. Now it will cost the county thousands to prosecute this old man. More waste on the BOS part. This country became the greates country in the world without all the taxes, regulations that they impose on the people and business. Today we are no longer the number one free country, we are now number 9. We drop one or two places every year. Very soon we will no loner be a country at all, we are about to fall.

MY THANKS to those of you who voiced support for me and for the cause of personal freedom in Mohave County. Mr. Bob Prince, who later apologized to me personally, is the man in the photo wearing the suit, to the left of the lightpole in the distance. Susan did a very good job of reporting, except that I didn't see a pitchfork either. I did keep questioning Piece about who owns the ground in front of the Administration Building, because these threats to the citizens have been going on for years, and according to Mohave County records, the entire 25 acre parcel is owned by Mark Sippel, et al., not by the County, therefor they have no right to order people to leave under Tresspass. You see these supposed leaders are spending like drunken sailors, when it would save the taxpayers money, if they paid off the very property we were standing on instead of robbing the highway/roads fund and borrowing the rest. Incidentally, for those of you who seem to prefer nepotism to freedon, I have been told that Mr. Pierce, head of Risk Management/Investigations, directly under County Manager Ron Walker is a former candy storw owner with no background in law enforcement, investigations or risk management, but he is the husband of a woman who is County Manager Ron Walker's secretary (hm). As to Mr Kanelos, who is affiliated with Western States Constitutional Alliance, unfurled a flag approximately 4"x6". He did put on a patriotic hat in protest of the fredd code ordinance, however. I was sitting in the front row and clearly heard Supervisor Gary Watson refer to it as "desecrating the American Flag". As Mr. Kanelos was being handcuffed, one of the Sheriff's Deputies asled if someone wanted to take this small flag, and I stod up and took it back to my seat, where it remained in upright position in plain view of the BOS, the County Manager, and the Legal Representative for the Board. Absolutely nothing was said to me about my having that little flag for the rest of the meeting.. There are already citizen lawsuits against the County for over $1 Million as a result of the actions of Ron Walker, whose contract has now been extended through 12/31/2012, with a provision that should he by fired by a new Board of Supervisors, he will receive another year of full pay and benefits. Yes, the County has insurance that would pay for the settlement of lawsuits, but if the anount is extraordinary, our cost of insurance in the future would be at a higher rate. Those of you who have had enough, please contact me at sharon.holmes_bos_2012@hotmail.com. I would like you to join with all of the candidates for 2012. We are meeting and preparing for next year's campaign, but we are also helping to stop the Animal Ordinance permanently, provide outreach services to people who have 928 phone numbers, but received no support from the County or State when 17 County residents had homes destroyed by flooding this past winter and lost many acres of their land as well. Mohave County covers a lot of territory, and a lot of the residents have never seen a Supervisor, nor have their concerns ever been addressed. Please help us change that NOW.

@V Stokes design on the edges of the flag. It is maritime law. Are you at Sea? Read the Federal Rules of Civil Procedure. Try and get them to put the Title 4 Flag on cop uniforms, in courts, and in the county building. They will refuse because they know what they have done suspended Constitutional law.

It's also not "upon it". They also don't say whether grommets should be silver or gold...or if there should even be grommets at all?

All the people who are against this protest are already mindless slaves.
Can anyone of you name a right that you do not have to ask the governments permission to do. Do you people even know what rights are. I can tell you people do not know the constitution, our history or what real freedom is.
I can tell you that since this country is no longer being run by the constitution is why we now have over 60 million unemployed, over 43 million on food stamps and losing 400 to 800 thousand jobs a month. Keep supporting the corruption and soon you will not have a country. This country is about to fall like every country though out history has because of ignorant people.

The flag should never have placed upon it, nor on any part of it, nor attached to it any mark, insignia, letter, word, figure, design, picture, or drawing of any nature. --Title 4, Chapter 1, Section 8, U.S. Code. (http://www4.law.cornell.edu/uscode/4/8.html) That means GOLD FRINGE as was in the county building, Sheriffs uniforms etc. Prove that wrong sheeple!! [Deleted].

I sometimes wonder what it would take for some people to find some backbone to take a stand on an issue, I can just see these negative people back in colonial times arguing that it's just a little tax on the tea, it's nothing to go to war about, just pay England the money. I guess it just goes along with the times, people don't have respect for others anymore and are now flushing their principles (if they ever had any) down the toilet. Some of these people would probably even say, what did Paul Revere think he was accomplishing by waking people up yelling "the British are coming". I applaud Jim Kanelos for fighting for something he believes in, FREEDOM.
