Kingman residents may want to check the label on their peanut butter before making their kids' lunches tomorrow.
Sunland Inc., a New Mexico company, voluntarily recalled 14 brands of its almond and peanut butters Monday after its Trader Joe's Creamy Salted Valencia Peanut Butter was linked to 29 salmonella bredeney outbreaks in 18 states, including Arizona, according to the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and U.S. Food and Drug Administration.
The outbreaks occurred from June 11 to Sept. 2. There have been no reports of death from the disease.
Trader Joe's pulled the product from its shelves on Saturday.
The recalled peanut and almond butters were sold under the Target brand Archer Farms, Earth Balance, Fresh & Easy, Heinen's, Joseph's, Natural Value, Naturally More, Safeway's Open Nature, Peanut Power, Sunflower Market's Serious Food, GNC's Snaclite, Sprout's Farmers Market, Sunland, Dogs Butter and Trader Joe's.
Sunland recalled the other brands of peanut and almond butter on Monday after it was determined that those products were processed by the same machinery as the Trader Joe's peanut butter.
Sunland has released a list of the specific product names, UPC codes and jar sizes that are affected by the recall.
The products were made between May 1 and Sept. 24 and have best-if-used-by-dates between May 1, 2013 and Sept. 24, 2013 on the side of the jar's label below the lid. They can also be identified by the UPC code that can be found on the side of the jar below the bar code. The list can be found at www.fda.gov or on the Miner's website, www.kdminer.com.
Symptoms of salmonella include fever, diarrhea, nausea, vomiting and abdominal pain. It can be fatal to young children, the elderly and people with weakened immune systems.
The FDA, CDC and Sunland recommend that customers who find a jar of the recalled almond or peanut butter in their cupboard return it the store for a refund or dispose of it by placing it in a plastic bag and tossing it in the trash.
