KINGMAN - The first meet of a grueling summer schedule for the Kingman Dolphins swim team startled the coaching staff when the Dolphins were at the Desert Storm Memorial Day Meet Saturday and Sunday in Las Vegas. The Dolphins took 11 swimmers to the meet and every one set a personal record in at least one event.
"It was an exciting meet. They surprised me," coach Beth Mathe said. "I knew we would have some drops, but there were a lot of significant ones."
Mathe said there were a couple of reasons for the dropping of times by the Dolphins. "Some haven't swam a particular event since last summer, but the majority of the drops were from all the hard work they have been putting in."
The Dolphins have been swimming about 5,000 yards every night, five nights a week for the past four to five weeks.
Jacob Aviles, 15, is one of the Dolphins who recently has been putting a lot of time in the pool after a layoff. Aviles lowered times in five events, including a drop of 23.74 seconds in the 200-meter individual medley. Aviles said the workouts are challenging but proving to be beneficial.
"It's pretty intense," Aviles said. "They're making me want to quit every day, but I keep coming back. It's usually when I'm swimming I think about quitting, but I'm all right when I get out."
Aviles swam the 50 freestyle in 33.10 and said it was his goal for the summer to get under 30.
The Dolphins dropped more than 10 seconds off of times in eight separate events. Alexis Bathauer, 13, took off 36.54 seconds in the 400 individual medley, and her brothers, Matthew and Michael, did it in two events each.
Michael, 8, dropped 13.67 in the 100 freestyle and 11.73 in the 50 backstroke. Matthew, 8, decreased his time by 26.73 in the 100 freestyle and 11.68 in the 50 backstroke.
Aden Dunton, 8, shaved off 10.31 from his 50 butterfly and 10.29 in the 100 freestyle. Patrick Webb, 13, took off 11.03 in the 400 freestyle.
The Dolphins host their intrasquad meet, the Blue and White Friday Night Meet, today at Centennial Pool. A parents meeting is scheduled for 5:30 p.m. and the meet should start between 6 and 6:15 p.m.
"We've got a big bunch of new swimmers, which is nice," Mathe said. "Friday will be their first meet, and we'll use it to teach them what to expect at meets."
