Kingman Letter: Vote for military veterans

We need a military person as president.

We don't need flunkies in the White House. Hint! Hint! to Obama. Obama never served time in the military and neither did Jeff Flake. So why vote for these jokers? They have no military background.

When I vote, I go for people who have served their country and not themselves, if you catch my drift. My vote goes to those who care about our country as well as our medical benefits, etc.

My question to you all is this: Why vote for idiots who'll screw this country over? Why not use common sense and get people in who care about our country? I may not be a college graduate, but at least I care about my country.

@ Linda

You said, "Obama is an amateur".

So are you going to tell me in some wacky way that Romney and Ryan are not? Especially Ryan, 42 years old, still to young if you ask me. Linda, please lay off the Kool-Aid!

Funny how the right wing honors military only as long as they kow tow to their right wing ideology! One can see how the fellow running against a decorated veteran, woman in a controversial contested seat has been called out in the media mocking her service since he has no military service! I am a former marine, vietnam era, and do not feel i have any more rights than a non-veteran to my citizenship, but its the right wing who harp on wars, but way to often like to advocate them but seem to be to busy to fight in them!

It's not hypocritical - you need to learn the definition of that word.

However, do you honestly and truly think that being awol from the Texas Air National Guard should be held in the same esteem as seeing combat in theatre? Should we equate making films on US soil for the army with managing logistics in the Pacific and earning commendations?

Everything's relative, man, and people who serve our country by actually being in harm's way - the people taking fire right now in Afghanistan, do deserve more respect based on their duties and the danger they face, as opposed to a mailroom clerk in Germany. Both these people should get respect for serving our nation, but I'll buy one a beer and not the other for what they've done.

“Kind of like your tales of military service, right Mr Moore?”

I’m not sure if I have been attacked or “belittled” with that one. I am proud of my military service and unlike many here I actually served our nation.

“i looove how the left discredits bush's and reagans military service and their lord and savior obama wasnt even in the military”

As usual a nonsense post. Obama was – at best – 12 during the Vietnam War and so it would have been difficult for him to have joined. However, as 2.7 million of us (yes, I was one of them) went off to the muck, mire and death of Vietnam Willard the Money Hider headed for France (after supporting the draft and the war) to knock on doors and annoy people and The Criminal went AWOL while The Dark Lord ran up five deferments and John Bonehead, “Had better things to do than go to war.” So the issue is not one of Obama’s service – or lack thereof - but one of the war mongering cowards who avoided going at any and all costs.

"how are you going to harp on what a past presidents military record looked like when the idol they love so much wasnt even in the military?"

Why? Because it keeps being made an issue.

Personally I believe there are more ways to serve your country than just by being in the military, as admirable as that is.

You know, considering the liability that George W. Bush's service in the TX National Guard (or lack thereof) was and the lack of support he had as he left office, I'd say that it was a wash overall. I'm ambivalent about Reagan's time in the army since there was a draft in WWII. Every president was going to have fought in WWII as long as their age-range was appropriate for the office.

Now based on age alone you're looking for Vietnam and Iraq I vets. Considering how they were treated by their own government when they got home, I shouldn't need to expand on why you don't see many in politics.

Another question I want answered - veterans make up 25% of all homeless people in the US. Why do we allow this to happen?

This year Ron Paul was the only GOP candidate with military service, and he's overtly disliked by the GOP mainstream.

You need to change your party's mentality if you complain about the lack of options.

Seems we have something new to chuckle about.

An anonymous Republican blocked the bill to give veterans a COLA. Nice. Not only blocked it, but the coward chose to remain anonymous.

And of course, how convenient it was, since the Senate is now in recess. What an appropriate word for Congress these days....recess....

Reagan's military service was real, unlike any of your posts. You denigrating his service record doesn't make Obama more appealing.

Yes Reagan did serve in military during world war II, made military documentary films for the military! My greatest disappointment as a adult was to learn John Wayne got a deferrment for having 8 kids to dodge duty in world war II, never could see him as a national hero after that, now there were some real actors who served and went over seas, not hard to research them in their biographys! Glenn Ford was one, Audey Murpny became a actor post his winning a medal for bravery in war! Romney dodged the war in France and via college as many of them right wing silver spoon kids in their mouths did! I believe Obama was to young to be drafted, and no one can fault anyone for not enlisting, I enlisted at age 17, to young to be drafted, but I do vividly remember how angry some of them draftees were at being drafted! Oh well life is like that!

Uh, are you talking about the president from the movie "Independence Day'?

Or did you mean military service like George Bush had?

Oh! No, you must mean like Jimmy Carter. Everyone loved him.

Kenny, I love this country as well, but if military service alone is all it takes then you've got a short and narrow focus on what makes you happy. Plus do you want someone that fought in Grenada? Or a 100 hour ground war in Desert Storm? How about a drone pilot that sits in North Carolina on a computer for most of his service?

I used to agree with you, in fact - back in high school. Then I got out and saw the world and learned some history.

Not all of us have to serve in the military to serve our country, and that's important to understand as well. I greatly appreciate the work our armed forces do, but there's more to a person than that.

"Tenuous at best. Ronald the Dim stayed in Hollywood and made films during the war. So yeah, he was “in” but he wasn’t “IN.”"

Keep that hatred flowing, like I tell Linda, don't let facts get in the way of an argument. Reagan was disqualified from serving overseas due to being nearsighted. Before being assigned to the Film and Entertainment Division, he served at Fort Mason at the San Francisco Port of Embarkation. Oops...did you miss that one?

Speaking of leaders, the far left wing New York TImes has an article by Helene Cooper and Robert Worth well worth reading.

You can google "In Arab Spring, Obama Finds a Sharp Test" and while long, it basically breaks down the disaster the Arab Spring obama ardently supported has been and one in which he is very implicated.

Against his own advisors, he pushed to oust Mubarek immediately, totally disregarding the fact Mubarek was a friend, albeit not a perfect one, to the United States, had kept the peace there, fought back the Muslim Brotherhood and kept peace with Israel. Now the Brotherhood, our enemy, is in.

Obama is an amateur. He won't listen, he has no patience and he believes he has the ability to bring world peace simply by who he is. He does not understand the Arab Street, that you must nurture relationships such as the Bush relationship with the Saudis. It is not perfect but it is the way it works over there and it keeps peace.

This is why he won't meet with world leaders this week at the UN. Frankly, they have no respect for him and don't want to meet with him except for Netanyahu - the one obama should be closest to but despises. Obama leans heavily to the muslim side, is shocked that Libya fell apart on his watch.

In a word, he is a disaster. We need a real leader, military background or not. Time is running out.

Kenny:

Mittens R-Money and Lyin' Paul Ryan didn't serve in the military either. Neither did Presidents Clinton or Reagan for that matter. Dubya "served" in the National Guard as I recall, but not in the actual military during Vietnam.

Military service, though desirable in many respects, is not a requirement if our politicians can show leadership qualities. In my mind R-Money and Ryan fail that leadership test when they dismiss nearly half the country as dependent moochers. I'm not impressed with Jeff Flake either, and Richard Carmona is getting my vote this year.

Our country has been through some very difficult times in the last four years and we have survived thanks to President Obama's clear headed steady leadership.
